Why Kolo Mee?
Born and raised in Kuala Lumpur, Kolo Mee was never on my radar. Perhaps it was because KL is a haven for Wantan Mee, and my taste buds had grown accustomed to its unique flavors. That all changed in 2019, when I visited Kuching, the birthplace of Kolo Mee. A friend introduced me to the dish, explaining the variety of sauces—black, white, and red. On her recommendation, I opted for the red sauce.
That first bite was a revelation. The rich, savory taste was unlike anything I'd experienced before, and I was hooked. Since moving to Johor Bahru, Kolo Mee has become my go-to meal on weekends. Its blend of textures and flavors makes it a dish worth craving for me.
Where is the best Kolo Mee in JB?
Recently, my friend introduced me to a new Kolo Mee shop that’s quickly become my favorite. Tucked away in a small, isolated area near a business district with a BIG Pharmacy and SDS Bakery, it’s a hidden gem.
Despite its modest location, the flavors it offers are delicious. Each visit reminds me why Kolo Mee holds a special place in my heart.

How much for the Kolo Mee?
At just RM7.00 for a small serving (as of June 2024), it's incredibly affordable, especially compared to other restaurants where prices are slightly higher.
Why I Love This?
The texture of the noodles is perfectly chewy and delicious, taking me back to my first Kolo Mee experience in Kuching. I particularly love the red sauce, which is made with Char Siu sauce, adding a rich, savory flavor that’s deeply satisfying. The affordability and fulfilling nature of the meal only add to its appeal.
My Verdict
This quaint little restaurant is perfect for enjoying a hearty and delicious meal on a budget. However, it can get extremely crowded, which impacts the service and results in considerable wait times. It’s not the best choice for formal guests, dates, or large family gatherings.
The restaurant could improve its cleanliness and ventilation, but given the pricing, it’s already a fantastic deal. If you’re on a food hunt in JB, I highly recommend checking it out.
